Meet Our Physicians

Dr. Candal is a fourth-generation physician and a second-generation ophthalmologist. He was born in Pennsylvania, but moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina as a child. He completed his Medical School training at the Universidad del Salvador, in Buenos Aires.

Soon after graduation, he returned to the United States and completed a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the Yale Eye Center. After two years of Internal Medicine, he returned to the Yale Eye Center for his ophthalmology residency. Dr. Candal subsequently pursued a Corneal/Refractive Surgery Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center, in Chicago, where he would meet his future wife.

Dr. Candal has been in Massachusetts since 2003, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the International Society of Refractive Surgery. His clinical interests are cataract and refractive surgery, including LASIK and PRK. He is a father of three soccer-loving kids, and he enjoys coaching them on their travel teams. He is fluent in Spanish and conversational in Portuguese.

Dr. Villazón graduated cum laude from Yale College before going to Yale University School of Medicine where he received his medical degree. He completed his ophthalmology residency training at Boston University School of Medicine/Boston City Hospital. He continued his training at BU, completing a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery. He has been teaching the ophthalmology residents as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Boston University since 1997, while working in the Cornea/Cataract Service at the VA Boston Healthcare System. He is also an affiliated professor at the New England College of Optometry. He has been practicing medicine for over 30 years.

Dr. Villazón is one of the most experienced surgeons in the greater Boston area, having completed over 60,000 eye surgeries. With his expertise in cataract and refractive surgery, he can help his patients navigate the hundreds of new options in cataract surgery including laser assisted cataract surgery. Being one of the first in the area to adopt this new technology, he has over a decade of experience with this recent advance in laser cataract surgery.

Dr. Ceida Chan earned her BA in cell and molecular biology from Northwestern University in 2000. She then went on to graduate magna cum laude from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2004. After moving to Boston, she completed a residency in geriatric and primary care optometry at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jamaica Plain in 2006.

Since 2007, Dr. Chan has served as an assistant professor of clinical optometry at the New England College of Optometry, including a time as Chief of the Homeless Service. She and her optometry students have provided eye care at seven Boston area homeless shelters including Pine Street Inn, the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, and Rosie’s Place.

Dr. Chan enjoys helping her patients find solutions to modern visual problems, such as dry eyes, headaches, and eyestrain caused by screentime. These quality-of-life issues are her favorite to address, as she loves seeing how much difference it makes in her patients’ lives.

Dr. Glenda Savitz is a third-generation optometrist. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of California Los Angeles. She then decided to combine her passion for helping people and love for science by completing her Doctor of Optometry degree at the Southern California College of Optometry. She went on to complete an Ocular Disease Residency with the Boston Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.

She conducted clinical research through the National Institute of Health at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Savitz has been in practice for over 10 years and makes it a priority to stay up to date with the latest technology in eye care in order to provide the most accurate exams. She focuses on comprehensive eye care and contact lens evaluations, with a special interest in dry eyes.

She resides in Newton with her husband and 2 children, where she enjoys hiking and spending time on the Charles River.

Dr. Heidi Fischer was born and raised in the small mid-western town of Hannibal, Missouri. Dr. Fischer attended the University of Missouri-Columbia on a Track and Field Scholarship where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated summa cum laude. Dr. Fischer then spent the following years in Leeds, England at University on a Rotary International Scholarship before returning to the U.S. to pursue her medical training at Harvard Medical School. After completing an internship in Internal Medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital Boston she moved on to her residency in Ophthalmology at Washington Eye Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

When Dr. Fischer’s surgical residency was complete, she returned to her hometown and spent 2 years working alongside the local ophthalmologist. In 1999, Dr. Fischer joined a practice within Newton Wellesley Hospital in Newton, MA before departing in 2008 to form her own practice, Fischer Eye Care. Today, she proudly helps patients at Eye Care and Laser Surgery of Newton Wellesley.

Jennifer Barberio is the Practice Administrator at Eye Care and Laser Surgery of Newton-Wellesley, where she has been a vital part of the team since 2017. With over eight years of experience in the ophthalmology field and 25 years in Managed HealthCare, she serves as the LASIK Refractive Coordinator, Cross-Linking Coordinator and Billing Coordinator. Her multifaceted role bridges clinical coordination and operational leadership, ensuring excellence in patient care and efficiency in practice management.

Known for her expertise in refractive procedures and her commitment to innovation and patient satisfaction, Jennifer plays an integral role in driving the continued growth and success of the practice. Jennifer’s passion is striving for high patient satisfaction.

Marina has been an integral part of our team for nearly five years, bringing with her over two decades of experience in managed health care. With a strong background in surgical coordination across multiple healthcare modalities, she offers a deep understanding of both patient care and clinical operations. Her extensive work with various specialty practices has made her a valuable resource for patients navigating the surgical process.
